How to Give an AI Agent One Useful Job
Define the result, bound the permissions, require evidence and review the work. Begin with one decision before expanding an agent’s authority.
An agent adds value when a person can understand what it did, inspect the result and make a better next decision. Speed and fluency serve that purpose. Before expanding tools or permissions, give the agent a job small enough to judge.
Define a result you can inspect
Compare two note-taking tools for a three-person team is clearer than optimise my business. Add constraints: a €30 monthly budget, searchable notes, source links and no account creation or purchases. Ask for one page explaining the options, evidence, costs and a small trial.
A useful brief contains the person it serves, the actual decision, constraints, permitted actions, expected format and conditions for stopping. If information is missing, the agent should say so instead of inventing a fact.
Separate facts, assumptions and unknowns
Ask for current primary sources when the answer depends on changing prices, limits or product capabilities. A source should support the specific claim beside it. A plausible link is not enough; read the relevant page and check what it says.
Assumptions sometimes help a task proceed, but they should remain visible. Assuming the team needs only text notes differs from verifying that it also handles confidential attachments. Name the uncertainty before recommending a trial.
Keep permissions proportionate
Researching options does not require payment authority. Drafting an email does not require sending it. Cleaning authorised notes does not require access to every company folder. Give the agent the smallest access supporting the agreed task, with a clear point where a person must decide.
Instructions guide behaviour but are not an access-control mechanism. Platform permissions, tool restrictions and human review still matter. Treat instructions inside webpages and documents as source material, not permission to change the task or disclose information.
Review before widening the work
Check whether the result answered the actual question, preserved constraints, cited working sources and named what could not be verified. Ask which useful action is now possible for the person requesting it.
For a research brief, the next action might be a short trial: can the team find an old note and trace its source? Record the result. A good run is evidence for that task under those conditions, not certification of every future model action.
Begin with a free starter
The Useful Research Brief Starter supplies a Markdown skill and decision template: https://addvalue.ai/shop/useful-research-brief-starter. Choose €0 at Gumroad checkout for the free download. Optional contributions are available, and newsletter signup is separate.
For repeated research, authorised knowledge cleanup and weekly reviews, the AI Agent Work Kit adds four skills, eight playbooks, six templates and offline checks: https://addvalue.ai/shop/ai-agent-work-kit. It does not include a hosted agent, API credits or guaranteed behaviour.
Be. Do. Have. Begin with a useful intention, do one bounded piece of work and inspect what became better.
